When you think of independent football, the team that pops in your head right away is Notre Dame. That should change this season though, because the Navy Midshipmen have a great chance of going undefeated and Ricky Dobbs winning the Heisman Trophy.

The Midshipmen have a fairly easy schedule this season headlined by Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Duke, and Maryland. The service academy games are always fun to watch and look for Navy to dominate in those two matchups.

Ricky Dobbs had a great season for Navy at quarterback last season and looks to be even better in 2010. He ran for 27 touchdowns which is an NCAA record for a quarterback. I see him as a top 10 Heisman Trophy contender, but no one else does. Guess I'll have to do some self-promoting for Ricky Dobbs.

I compare a lot of his game to a young Michael Vick. He can run like a running back and has a cannon arm. If he can lead Navy to a perfect season, how can he not win the Heisman Trophy this year?

Navy's triple option is the best offense in the NCAA. When you have a quarterback like Ricky Dobbs running that offense it's even more dangerous for a defense to stop. Look for the offense to be even better with a more experienced offense.

Here is Navy's schedule for 2010 and my game by game prediction for the Midshipmen.

Maryland W

Georgia Southern W

@ Louisiana Tech W

@ Air Force W

@ Wake Forest W

SMU W

Notre Dame W

Duke W

@ East Carolina W

Central Michigan W

Arkansas State W

Army W

Ricky Dobbs has an easy schedule for him to light up the stat sheet this season. I see him improved in the pass game throwing 10 to 15 touchdowns and then running for 20 to 25 touchdowns. That's a true Heisman contender right there if he guides Navy to glory in 2010. No one from Navy has won the Heisman Trophy since Roger Staubach won it way back when. I see Dobbs joining him in that elite class in Navy history.

Their offense should score about 35 points per game this season against sub-par defenses that they face. The defense was shaky last year, but look for them to be much improved this year.

Overall, Navy looks to have one of it's best years in school history with an undefeated record. Navy should get the respect they deserve and people finally can see Ricky Dobbs nationally. I see a magical year happening in Annapolis this year.

Also, look for the Midshipmen to be in a BCS Bowl in 2010. Sorry Notre Dame, Navy is now the top dog of the independents in the NCAA.
