Losing "The Boss": George Steinbrenner Dies of Heart Attack
New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was found dead in his home today due to a massive heart attack. It's been a very sad weak to be a New York Yankee player or fan. First, it was legendary announcer Bob Shepperd, now the owner George Steinbrenner.
He turned the Yankees back into a winner when he bought the team in 1973. While he was the owner, the Yankees won seven titles. Steinbrenner made the Yankees the face of the MLB.
Then, he was the king of free agency during his time. He went out and signed Catfish Hunter, Dave Winfield, C.C. Sabathia, and Mark Texiera notable players in free agency. Most players dream is too play in pinstripes and he easily made that happen in the offseason.
During Steinbrenner's tenure with the Yankees, he fired and hired Billy Martin five times as their manager. He had to one of the most entusiastic owners in the history of sports. Well, it worked by how muhc success the New York Yankees had under him.
I expect the Yankees to take this to the heart and I see them being the number one seed in the playoffs in October. Will they make it to the World Series in a tough American League, I don't think it will happen.
In 2005, the Indianapolis Colts lost Tony Dungy's son to suicide when they were 13-0. I think that's how it will play out for the Yankees this season, so close but not close enough.
New York's captain Derek Jeter will lead this team to over 100 wins, I gurantee that. Also, I see Miguel Cabrera falling out of his triple crown threat and Robinson Cano will win the American League MVP.
New York lost a legend today, but he will never be forgotten in Yankees history. George Steinbrenner's sons Hank and Hal will do a great job as co-owners of the team now. They were the owners last year and look what they did, won a championship. The Yankees will do alright when a Steinbrenner is owning the team.
Steinbrenner truly was a maverick at the owner posistion, but he will always be remembered as the man who revived the New York Yankees into a winner again.
